Before coming to Vincit I worked for 18 years in the IT sector as a developer, software integrator, and project manager. I worked for many years in each role and the expectations of me were clear. When I moved to Vincit in 2018, my first role was supposed to be a continuation of this with me working as a project manager. In fact, I ended up as the product manager instead. However, I quickly realized I wanted to do something different, and so began a rapid evolution of my career.
After talking with Vincit’s Strategy Director, I jumped to our continuous services team where I started as a service manager. My job was all about managing and handling Vincit services, and I became kind of a jack of all trades.
After a couple years, the head of our DevOps team had noticed I have a talent for speaking and suggested I move into sales. I decided to take the risk and change roles again and started with business development. I’ve been doing that for three years now, but with several different teams during this time.
I’m also a shop steward, which means I represent employees in negotiations with management. I’m proud of this position. It means I need to know our people well, know what they want, and stand up for them while still understanding the needs of the company.
And you know what? This approach to working suits me perfectly. I used to be happy with clear expectations and a fixed role, but in the past 10 years I’ve really felt the need to change and advance in my career. I also see possibilities for the future about how my career will develop – I haven’t really been leading people yet. Maybe that’s next.
That’s one of the things I really like about Vincit. If you want to change your career direction, you can. There is a lot of self-steering here. Of course, the flip side is that you have to take responsibility for your worklife as well – though Vincit does offer tools and supervisor support to help with this.
This industry has been going through a turbulent period recently, especially over the last few years. Which is why we continue to need the best people working here.
