Career story, Joni Vainio-Kaila: the joys of learning all the time

Before coming to Vincit, I wasn’t studying programming – I studied mathematics at the University of Turku. I had done programming before, but more as a hobby. When I saw the Vincit Rising Star program, I got interested in pursuing a new opportunity and applied. 

The Vincit Rising Star trainee program is for those people who want to work as software developers. Since launching the program in 2020, Vincit has employed software developer trainees from a wide range of educational and occupational backgrounds. I’m happy to be one of these.

Working on a wide range of projects

When I first started working at Vincit, my focus was on internal projects, developing projects for Univincity and payroll for example. Since then, my role has expanded to include customer-facing projects and I now do full-stack development. 

The projects are interesting here and I’ve learned a tremendous amount of things over the past four years. I still want to learn more, which is one of the things I like about Vincit – there are resources to help you grow and develop.  Our internal training program, Univincity, supports ongoing learning and mentorship well beyond my time in the Rising Star program.

A job that balances work and fun

For young developers, working at Vincit offers a lot of strong benefits: you get real responsibility and variety. Because Vincit works with a wide range of customers, you can work on both small startups and large enterprise projects, which means you'll build broad and relevant experience. 

There’s a great crew here at Vincit that I’ve learned a lot from. We also have a genuinely good time hanging out together. Every second month we have activities (part of the Fun Squad) and I’ve gotten to try things I’d never done before like curling and fencing, along with activities like Finnish baseball and yoga. 

If any young developers are considering a career path at Vincit, I encourage you to take the plunge and apply for the Rising Star program. It’s really paid off for me.
