WSOY

Data-driven sales and publishing

WSOY, Finland's largest publisher of general literature, has been at the center of Finnish literature for over 140 years. The company publishes over a thousand new titles annually and continuously offers a selection of thousands of books in different formats, reaching readers all across Finland. Over 13 million books are sold every year. Vincit helped WSOY envision the possibilities of modern sales reporting, then built an architecture based on Microsoft Fabric with the integration of multiple data sources at its core.

The challenge: Fragmented sales tracking across multiple systems

WSOY previously used traditional spreadsheet-based and on-premises solutions to track daily sales and campaigns. Reporting and analysis were manual and time-consuming, and sales data was handled across several different systems.

As the publishing industry digitalized, WSOY wanted to develop a more agile, future-proof data solution that would enable:

  • Combining sales data: Integrating numerous Point of Sale data sources into a shared data platform.

  • Better understanding of readership: Analyzing sales data by location and by store to enable more precise and effective campaigns.

  • More efficient sales reporting: Dynamic reports that reduce manual work and speed up access to information.

  • A broader view of sales: Tracking trends and unexpected changes, and combining sales forecasts with event data.

  • Inventory management: Tracking book clearance sales with a single system.

Data-driven sales tracking has revolutionized the way we work – we can now make faster and better decisions based on up-to-date and accurate information. The development work enables even more efficient planning and day-to-day sales work.

The solution: A Microsoft Fabric–based architecture

We helped WSOY envision the possibilities of modern sales reporting. In the first phase, we focused on identifying the key questions and metrics that would allow sales management to make better decisions.

We built an architecture based on Microsoft Fabric, at the core of which was the integration of multiple data sources. We developed source-specific data collection solutions that make sales data available in a unified format across different time periods. The data model was designed to be flexible, to meet growing and changing needs in the future.

Sales tracking and analysis were enabled through comprehensive Power BI reports, offering views ranging from total sales all the way down to the level of individual books.

"The most important thing in the project was to build a solution that supports sales needs now and in the future. With Microsoft Fabric, we were able to create a scalable and agile data management environment that allows WSOY to monitor its sales in near real time and react to changes quickly."

The benefits: faster, better-informed sales decisions

WSOY gained a modern data platform built on Microsoft Fabric to support its sales organization. The solution collects data in near real time from the Point of Sale sources of various retailers and brings it into a shared reporting environment.

With the new solution, WSOY is able to:

  • Monitor retailer margins and revenue in real time

  • Analyze campaign performance accurately

  • Manage the status of warehouse and store inventory efficiently

  • Anticipate sales development and respond to changes more agilely
